Introduction

MacSpice simulates and analyses electronic circuits that can range in complexity from a single resistor to an integrated circuit comprising tens-of-thousands of devices. It has users who range in experience from novices to retired integrated circuit designers. It is used at various universities internationally for research and teaching.

MacSpice runs on Intel architecture Apple Macintosh computers. It is compatible with, Berkeley Spice 3f5 but incorporates many improvements to Spice 3f5 – from simple bug-fixes to entirely new commands, algorithms and solution strategies. For example: the memory leaks that affected Spice 3f5 have been cured; new algorithms have been developed to facilitate the simulation of large circuits, and to reduce simulation time; MacSpice provides a robust multi-parameter optimizer and facilities for inter-process communication with other applications.

What MacSpice Does

Circuit simulation is a way of building and testing virtual models of electronic devices. It is usually cheaper and quicker to simulate a design than to build a prototype. MacSpice requires a text-file description of the circuit as input. This 'netlist' is a list of components and the nodes they connect to. Users may prepare netlists with a text editor, or derive them from a circuit diagram using a third-party schematic-capture application. MacSpice then builds a numerical model of the circuit and analyses this.

A command interpreter (shell) is used to specify the types of analyses that are required and how the results should be processed, saved or displayed. The high quality of the MacSpice command interpreter makes the automation of tasks straightforward.

Simulation is a tool, not a magic-wand. The quality of the results depends on the accuracy of the netlist and the device models used. Within Spice most devices are ideal – its resistor, for example, has just one property: resistance. A real resistor has parasitic inductance and capacitance; if these have a significant influence on the circuit, they must be added explicitly to the netlist.

Learn to Use MacSpice

MacSpice helps the user by providing error messages, warnings and explanatory notes. Users will, however, need to supplement these with following reference and training and information:

POWERFUL FREE ECAD TOOL AND ALTIUM 365 SERVICES FOR EVERYONE

Being a part of the Open Source Hardware Community we think you deserve better design tools, made specifically for you and the community you belong to. That’s why we’ve created CircuitMaker; a free PCB Design Software, built on Altium Designer technology. With a streamlined interface and powerful engine to boot, you’ll never have to worry about your software holding you back. See what you can do with CircuitMaker.

Free Mac Circuit Design Software

  • UNLIMITED ACCESS & FREE TO USE

Typically, free EDA software comes with design restrictions that render it useless for any real project. With CircuitMaker, you get the full power of 16 signal layers plus 16 plane layers, and no restrictions to the PCB dimensions. Also, with no commercial clause restrictions, you are free to earn revenue with your design.

  • MASSIVE COMPONENT LIBRARY

CirucitMaker is built on a community library with hundreds of thousands of components, all backed by the comprehensive, realtime Octopart database. Placing components in CircuitMaker designs is as easy as searching by manufacturer part number or by design parameters. You can also add your own custom parts and mechanical components.

  • SHARE & COLLABORATE

Supported by Altium 365 platform you can create and work on projects with your team or invite other community members to work with you on the design. Harness the power of teams to get projects done faster. Projects can be forked and modified at any time so you can build new designs using the community wisdom and experience without having to start from scratch.

  • NATIVE 3D™

Altium Native 3D™ technology means that when you’re in the PCB editor, just hit the 3 key and you can immediately see the PCB layout in full interactive 3D. It will show any component clearance violations and you’ll also even know what the overlap distances are, so you can get your designs right — and to fit the box — the first time.

  • ONE-CLICK MANUFACTURING
    (coming soon on Altium 365)

Once you’ve finished your design, release the project to the community. From there, you can download the gerbers and send them off to any PCB manufacturer. To make it easy, we’ve partnered with select manufacturers to provide a one-click manufacturing button that can directly send your board for quoting — either bare board prototype or full PCB fabrication and assembly—at the best possible price.

  • PUSH-AND-SHOVE ROUTING

Routing capabilities are robust in Circuitmaker. The interactive routing modes include obstacle avoidance, hug, hug-n-push, and obstacle ignore. The push modes will push other traces and vias, as well as hop-over. You can even route differential pairs and interactively add accordions to nets that need that extra length for signal delays.

  • MULTI-SHEET SCHEMATIC EDITOR

CircuitMaker uses the same easy-to-use schematic editor as Altium Designer. You can create complex multi-sheet designs, use hierarchical design blocks, and generate SmartPDF™ outputs from your project.

  • TOPOLOGICAL AUTO-ROUTER

The Situs™ topological autorouter works in concert with your design rules to help you get the board done fast. With BGA and SMT fanout, parallel memory, hug, and via optimization, it’s easy to use Situs to get working results really fast. You can also interactively route multi-nets or single nets, or use manual routing with auto-complete.

  • DRC/DFM VALIDATED OUTPUTS

When you’re ready to turn your virtual design into a real physical board, CircuitMaker will generate industry standard CAM outputs. You can choose Gerber and NC Drill, or ODB++, or both. IPC test point reports and all other necessary outputs for professional manufacturing can be generated as well, and all this through a succinct release process that ensures your board passes design rules checks for DFM and assembly.
